German Buchclub: Momo, by Michael Ende
Michael Ende was one of the most significant fantasy writers for children in Germany. His works include The Neverending Story, which was made into the 1984 English language film, the Jim Button series, as well as Momo, which was published in 1973. It is also known as the Men in Grey, and has been translated into numerous other languages. It won the German Youth Literature Prize in 1974, and has been described as a significant philosophical work of fantasy.
The story centres on a little girl, Momo, who does not know how old she is, or where she comes from. She lives in an abandoned amphitheatre on the edge of a strange city. When the grey gentlemen arrive and begin to steal people’s time from them, Momo must figure out a way to stop the men, and retrieve people’s stolen time. Momo and her friends must fight…
